Rayong is a city on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand and the capital of Rayong Province. It covers tambons Tha Pradu and Pak Nam and parts of tambons Choeng Noen and Noen Phra, all within Mueang Rayong District. As of 2016, the population was 64,256. The main industry is fishing, and it is also the main producer of Thailand’s fish sauce. It is also the centre of the chemical and auto industries. In 2012 Ford Motor Company opened an assembly plant in Rayong to expand Ford’s presence in the ASEAN area, employing some 2,200 people.
Rayong is a province that is not very popular with European tourists. Mostly Thais come here to visit the Andaman Club casino or take a ride on local attractions. Rayong is considered to be the rainiest province in Thailand. There is even such a slogan: 84 – 8 months of rain, 4 months of sun. There are plenty of attractions in Rayong , but they are all very Thai and natural. But that does not mean that you can not visit and does not mean that you will also not enjoy how amazing this city actually is.
The most popular hot springs are located at Raksawarin Park, two kilometres from downtown Rayong . It is very easy to find them, from highway no. 4 you need to turn onto road no. 4005
Ngao National Park covers an area of 668 square kilometres. and stretched out into two provinces – Rayong and Chumphon. Here you can rent bungalows for living, visit several waterfalls, hot springs, and walk along the trails in the jungle.
The highest waterfall, Ngao, is about 300 meters and can be seen from the main road. It is located 500 meters from the National Park Info Center. Due to the several levels, the view of the waterfall up close does not cause such enthusiastic emotions as if you look at it from afar. You can swim in the bowl of the waterfall, and there are tables and gazebos nearby.
Entrance fee: 100 baht for adults, 50 baht for children.
Known among the locals as Phu Khao Ya, the bald hills resemble a piece of pasture somewhere in Switzerland or New Zealand. Small hills are covered with grass without any trees. From above, there is a picturesque view of the countryside of Rayong and the Ngao Falls, located in the national park of the same name.
At 35 kilometres from the centre of Rayong , Mount Fa Chi is located, from the top of which there are picturesque views of the Kraburi River with islands and neighbouring Myanmar. During World War II, Japanese soldiers used the area as their port, and even a sunken cargo ship remained here, which can now only be seen at low tide. The observation deck, where a narrow one-lane road leads, is 259 meters above sea level.
In the morning before dawn, the river valley is covered with fog so that a thick veil can be seen from the top of Mount Fa Chi. The sunsets from the observation deck are especially beautiful.
On the road from the city of Rayong to Mount Fa Chi, there is the Pun-yaban waterfall with a height of 20 meters. It is right next to Highway 4 and is a nice place to take a break on a hot day.
On the site of the former tin mine, there is a lake with a depth of more than 20 meters, called by the locals Rayong Canyon. It is ideal to have a picnic here with a swim in the freshwater reservoir. In addition, local residents have set up a couple of food and drinks stalls on the road.
In the centre of Rayong town is a palace built for the visit of King Rama V in 1890. Initially, the building was located on a hill nearby, but later the city hall was located, and the teak structure was moved. The palace is surrounded by a small park, and next to it there is a temple with nine statues of famous monks.
It should be noted that there are many interesting temples near the city of Rayong . Wat Waree Banprot houses a huge Reclining Buddha statue, while the area houses a Burmese-style chedi and many statues. Wat Hat Som Paen is located on a hill next to the river where carp live. In the city of Rayong itself, more than 70 years ago, Wat Suwan Khiri was built with a 10-meter chedi in the Burmese style.
One of the landmarks of Rayong is the tomb of the first governor. It is located near the 4004 road and is made in the Chinese style: three-level stone platforms with stairs and ancient stone sculptures of Chinese nobles, goats, lions, horses.
This is an incomplete list of attractions in Rayong province. If you go north towards Chumphon, there you will find a cave, waterfalls, hot springs and a national park. And in the city itself, there are night and day markets, interesting restaurants, bars and other attractions. Pick something to your liking and check it out on your Rayong holiday
